MOST ANDROID SECURITY THREATS WOULD BE BLOCKED IF PHONES RAN LATEST VERSION

Android 4.2 contains protection against premium rate SMS apps, but has a very low distribution rate, Juniper researchers say

Over three quarters of Android threats are malicious apps that send SMS messages to premium rate numbers and could be mitigated by a protection feature present in Android 4.2, according to researchers from networking vendor Juniper Networks.

However, because manufacturers and carriers fail to update Android end user devices in a timely fashion, only 4 percent of devices currently run Android 4.2, even though this version was released more than six months ago.

From March 2012 to March 2013 the number of mobile threats grew by 614 percent to reach a total of 276,259 malicious samples, researchers from Juniper Networks’ Mobile Threat Center (MTC) said in a report released Wednesday. Of those malicious applications, 92 percent target the Android operating system, they said.

The surge of Android malware in the past two years is consistent with the findings of other security vendors that track mobile threats. This growth is primarily driven by Android’s “commanding share” of the global smartphone market, the Juniper researchers said.

The majority of Android malware, 77 percent, are apps that earn money for their creators by either requiring users to send SMS messages to premium rate numbers or by surreptitiously sending such messages on their own. These threats usually masquerade as legitimate applications or come bundled in pirated apps.

The Juniper researchers estimate that every successful attack using such an app can bring an immediate profit of US$10 for the attacker on average.

Android 4.2 introduced a feature that detects attempts to send SMS messages to special rate numbers, also known as short codes, and prompts users for confirmation. Unfortunately, due to the Android market fragmentation, only 4 percent of Android devices are currently running Android 4.2.x.

This estimation is based on data collected from Google Play over a 14-day period ending on May 1, 2013, the Juniper researchers said. Based on the same data, the most common versions of Android found on devices are Android 2.3.3 to 2.3.7, also known as “Gingerbread,” with a 36.4 percent coverage and Android 4.0.3 and 4.0.4, also known as “Ice Cream Sandwich,” with 25.5 percent.

The lack of regular updates for Android devices contributes to the growth of Android malware, because the latest protections added by Google to the operating systems reach users too late or never, the researchers said.

The second most common type of Android threats are spyware applications that capture and transfer sensitive user data to attackers. These account for 19 percent of all malicious samples collected by Juniper’s MTC.

Some information-stealing Android Trojan apps discovered during the past year and distributed through drive-by downloads or phishing emails could also pose a threat to enterprise environments, the Juniper researchers said. Data collected from enterprise mobile devices running Juniper’s Junos Pulse endpoint collaboration and security software showed at least one infection on 3.1 percent of such devices.

While that figure is not large enough to raise a significant alarm, it is proof that the threat of mobile malware to corporate devices is not only theoretical, the Juniper researchers said. “We expect the presence of mobile malware in the enterprise to grow exponentially in the coming years.”

Hackers stole $45 million in ATM card breach

Kevin McCoy, USA TODAY4:10 p.m. EDT May 9, 2013

NEW YORK — They didn’t use guns, masks or even threatening notes passed to bank tellers.

But an alleged international gang of cyberthieves managed to steal $45 million from thousands of ATMs in carefully coordinated attacks conducted in a matter of hours, federal authorities charged Thursday.

A four-count indictment unsealed in Brooklyn charged that eight members of the alleged gang’s New York City crew alone stole approximately $2.4 million from nearly 3,000 ATMs across the metropolitan area in secret strikes carried out on two days in February.

STORY: ATM robberies – the hard vs easy methods

STORY: Feds: Yonkers men part of credit card hacking heist

“In the place of guns and masks, this cybercrime organization used laptops and the Internet,” said Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch as federal authorities announced details of one of the largest 21st century versions of cyber-robbery yet uncovered. “Moving as swiftly as data over the Internet, the organization worked its way from the computer systems of international corporations to the streets of New York City, with the defendants fanning out across Manhattan to steal millions of dollars from hundreds of ATMS.”

Federal prosecutors and investigators said the alleged attacks are known in the cyberunderworld as “Unlimited Operations” — because using sophisticated computer-hacking techniques enable those involved to gain access to virtually unlimited criminal proceeds.

The schemes involve hacking into the computer systems of credit card processors, stealing information involving prepaid debit card accounts and eliminating the withdrawal limits and balances of those accounts. The moves enable international organized crime cells that work in swift, surgically coordinated attacks to withdraw unlimited amounts of cash from ATMs before the operations are shut down.

According to the indictment, the alleged gang carried out two lucrative unlimited operations between October 2012 and last month. In the initial attack, hackers working with the gang on Dec. 22 allegedly targeted a credit card processor that handled prepaid MasterCard debit cards issued by the National Bank of Ras Al-Khaimah, a United Arab Emirates bank also known as Rakbank

After penetrating the processor’s computer network, the hackers fraudulently manipulated the balances and withdrawal limits on Rakbank prepaid debit card accounts. Then, teams of so-called cashers allegedly launched carefully timed attacks that caused more than $5 million in criminal losses from more than 4,500 ATMs in about 20 countries.

In just two hours and 25 minutes, the thieves allegedly conducted 750 fraudulent transactions that withdrew nearly $400,000 from approximately 140 New York City ATM locations, according to prosecutors and the indictment.

The alleged second unlimited operation unfolded between the afternoon of Feb. 19 and the pre-dawn hours of the following day. This time, the gang’s hackers allegedly compromised computers of the processor of prepaid debit cards for the Bank of Muscat, located in Oman.

In approximately 10 hours, casher cells in 24 countries conducted approximately 36,000 ATM transactions worldwide, withdrawing an estimated $40 million, the indictment charged. The haul included $2.4 million withdrawn by the alleged New York crew.

Authorities in more than a dozen countries around the world are working with U.S. counterparts on the investigation. The allegations announced Thursday did not identify the suspected mastermind leading the cyberattacks or the suspected computer hackers.

However the indictment charged the gang’s New York group was headed by Alberto Yusi Lajud-Pena, 23, who was also known as “Prime” and “Albertico.” He and gang confederates Elvis Rafael Rodriguez, 24, and Emir Yasser Yeje, 24, allegedly laundered hundreds of thousands of dollars stolen from the ATMs by depositing the cash in bank accounts and using the money to buy luxury cars and expensive watches.

In a single transaction, a total of nearly $150,000 in $20 bills was deposited in a Miami account controlled by Lajud-Pena, the indictment charged. He was found murdered in the Dominican Republic last month, authorities said.

Federal authorities have so far seized hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and bank accounts, two Rolex watches and a Mercedes SUV. They are also seeking forfeiture of a Porsche Panamera, which, like the SUV, was allegedly bought with money stolen in the cyber scheme.

In all, seven of the eight suspected members of the gang’s New York crew have been arrested and indicted on charges of conspiracy to commit access device fraud, money laundering conspiracy and money laundering. If convicted, they would face a maximum 10-year prison terms on each money laundering charge, 7.5 years on the access device fraud count and up to $250,000 in fines.

Saudi Arabia (Listeni/ˌsdi əˈrbi.ə/ or Listeni/ˌsɔːd əˈrbi.ə/; Arabic: السعوديةas-Su‘ūdiyyah or as-Sa‘ūdiyyah), officially known as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (Arabic: المملكة العربية السعوديةal-Mamlakah al-‘Arabiyyah as-Su‘ūdiyyah, About this sound Arabic pronunciation (help·info)), is the largest Arab state in Western Asia by land area (approximately 2,250,000 km2 (870,000 sq mi), constituting the bulk of the Arabian Peninsula) and the second-largest in the Arab world (after Algeria). It is bordered by Jordan and Iraq to the north, Kuwait to the northeast, Qatar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates to the east, Oman to the southeast, Yemen in the south, the Red Sea to the west and Persian Gulf to the east. Its population is estimated to consist of 16 million citizens and an additional 9 million registered foreign expatriates and 2 million illegal immigrants.[10]

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was founded by Abdul-Aziz bin Saud (known for most of his career as Ibn Saud) in 1932, although the conquests which eventually led to the creation of the Kingdom began in 1902 when he captured Riyadh, the ancestral home of his family, the House of Saud, referred to in Arabic as Al Saud. The Saudi Arabian government has been an absolute monarchy since its inception, and it describes itself as being Islamic. Saudi Arabia is the birthplace of Islam and the kingdom is sometimes called “the Land of the Two Holy Mosques” in reference to Al-Masjid al-Haram (in Mecca), and Al-Masjid al-Nabawi (in Medina), the two holiest places in Islam.

Saudi Arabia has the world’s largest oil reserves which are concentrated largely in the Eastern Province.[11][12] Oil accounts for more than 95% of exports and 70% of government revenue, although the share of the non-oil economy has been growing recently. This has facilitated the transformation of an underdeveloped desert kingdom into one of the world’s wealthiest nations. Vast oil revenues have permitted rapid modernisation, such as the creation of a welfare state.[13] It has also the world’s sixth largest natural gas reserves.

According to the 2012 list of the World’s Richest Persons published by Forbes Magazine, there are now 1,226 billionaires worlwide with a total net worth amounting to $4.6 trillion.

The monetary power of these billionaires is as large as the total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of India, the world’s 2nd most populous nation which registered a 2011 GDP of $4.47 trillion. The combined net worth of the 1,226 billionaires is also way more than the combined GDPs of 127 poorest countries in the world.

The Forbes list is dominated by the same people, with three new ones entering the Top 10 this year.

Carlos Slim Helu of Mexico’s largest telecommunications company Telmex remains as the world’s richest man for the third straight year, despite a $5 billion drop in net worth from last year.

Microsoft’s Bill Gates is still No. 2 while Berkshire Hathaway’s Warren Buffet is unchanged at No. 3.

Stefan Persson of Sweden is this year’s 8th richest person, up five notches from No. 13 last year, thanks to continued expansion of apparel brand H&M which he heads.

Re-entering the Top 10 for the first time since 2004 is Asia’s richest person Li Ka-Shing, Chairman of Hutchison Whampoa, a Hong Kong-based conglomerate that runs Watson’s, the world’s largest chain of beauty and health stores, and operates a number of container terminals globally.

Wrapping up the Top 10 is Karl Albrecht of Germany, owner of Aldi Supermarkets, who was also No. 10 in 2010 but fell to No. 12 in the 2011 richest people list.

Top 10 World’s Richest Persons – 2012

#1. Carlos Slim Helu

Richest Peron in the World - Carlos Slim Helu

  • Marital Status: widowed, 6 children
  • Education: BA/BS, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico

Carlos Slim Helu retains the title of world’s richest man for the third year in a row despite a fortune that’s $5 billion smaller than a year ago-primarily because of a lower share price for telecom giant America Movil, which accounts for more than half his net worth. In April the company was fined $1 billion by Mexican regulators for monopolistic practices, but is appealing the decision. Slim is spending more time working with his Carlos Slim Foundation and the Telmex Foundation than he has in the past.

#2. William Gates III

Richest People in the World - Bill Gates

  • Net Worth: $61 billion (up from $56 billion in 2010)
  • 2010 Rank: #2

First part of mission accomplished: Bill Gates, the most generous person on the planet (he’s given away $28 billion already), has helped eradicate polio in India. In January the country announced its first polio-free year. Gates will continue to chip in $200 million a year to rid the world of a disease that is still endemic in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. His Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is also spearheading a malaria vaccine that is showing promise in clinical trials. Meanwhile the vaccine-spreading organization he founded, called GAVI, raised $4.3 billion in pledges aimed at distributing drugs to thwart the deadly infections that cause meningitis, pneumonia, and diarrhea in developing countries. He also has a new endeavor in the works: fixing agriculture. His foundation has committed more than $2 billion to small farmers. Less than one-fourth of his net worth is still held in Microsoft, whose shares are trading higher than they have been in 10 years; the rest is in private equity, bonds and stocks such as Ecolab and Mexican broadcaster Televisa.

#3. Warren Buffett

Richest Man in the World - Warren Buffett

  • Net Worth: $44 billion (down from $50 billion in 2010)
  • 2010 Rank: #3
  • Age: 81
  • Fortune: Self made
  • Source: Berkshire Hathaway
  • Country Of Citizenship: United States
  • Residence: Omaha, Nebraska, USA
  • Industry: Investments
  • Marital Status: widowed, remarried, 3 children
  • Education: MS, Columbia University; BA/BS, University of Nebraska Lincoln

Warren Buffett announced in February he’d finally made the decision about who will replace him, but he wouldn’t give a name. In December, he chose his farmer son, Howard, as the future non-executive chairman and “guardian of the firm’s values.” New Senate legislation requiring the rich to pay at least a 30% tax rate has been dubbed the “Buffett Rule” in homage to the billionaire’s frequent public statements that the wealthiest should pay more than the average Joe. His net worth is down $6 billion year on year because of a 7% slump in Berkshire’s stock. In his latest annual letter he confessed to some mistakes, including being “dead wrong” about a housing comeback.

#4. Bernard Arnault

Richest Man in the World - Bernard Arnault

  • Net Worth: $41 billion (no change from last year)
  • 2010 Rank: #4
  • Age: 63
  • Fortune: Inherited and growing
  • Source: Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH)
  • Country of Citizenship: France
  • Residence:Paris, France
  • Marital Status: Married; five children
  • Education: BA/BS, Ecole Polytechnique de Lausanne

Bernard Arnault orchestrated another stellar year for his luxury-goods empire, LVMH. Profits jumped 22%, thanks to record sales at Louis Vuitton and the successful integration of Bulgari. The group formed a joint venture with one of the world’s leading tanneries of crocodile leather, Heng Long. Arnault hasn’t done as well with his more pedestrian investment in supermarket chain Carrefour, which is worth $1 billion less than it was a year ago. Among his personal high-end collection: He owns Indigo Island in the Bahamas (rent: $300,000 a week) and ski chalet Cheval Blanc in Courchevel.

#5. Amancio Ortega

Richest Man in the World - Amancio Ortega

  • Net Worth: $37.5 billion (up from $31 billion in 2010)
  • 2010 Rank: #7
  • Age: 75
  • Fortune: Self-made
  • Source: Zara
  • Country of Citizenship: Spain
  • Residence: La Coruna, Spain
  • Marital Status: Married; three children

Ortega stepped down as chairman of his global fashion firm, Inditex, in July 2011. The company hasn’t missed a beat. Shares are up one-fourth in the past year, helping boost his fortune by $6.5 billion and pushing him into the global top 5 ranks for the first time. Ortega paid $536 million to billionaire Esther Koplowitz in December for Torre Picasso, a 43-story skyscraper in Madrid. He also owns Epic Residences & Hotel, a luxury 54-story waterfront condo and hotel development in Miami. Other personal holdings include a stake in a soccer league and a horse-jumping circuit. A railway worker’s son, he started as a gofer in a shirt store.

#6. Larry Ellison

Richest People in the World - Lawrence Ellison

  • Net Worth: $36 (down from $39.5 billion in 2010)
  • 2010 Rank: #5
  • Age: 67
  • Fortune: Self-made
  • Source: Oracle
  • Country of Citizenship: United States
  • Residence: Woodside, California, USA
  • Marital Status: Thrice divorced, remarried; two children
  • Education: Dropout, University of Chicago; Dropout, University of Illinois at Urbana

Oracle’s stock has been oscillating for months. It’s rebounded since its August low but is still off 15% year on year due to a slowdown in the software and hardware giant’s sales, enough to knock $3.5 billion off Ellison’s fortune. Seeking to profit from cloud computing, Oracle acquired Taleo in February for $1.9 billion and RightNow in October for $1.5 billion. Ellison has been tagged as one of the clutch of billionaires interested in buying the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team. His big sport is yachting: he won the America’s Cup in 2010 and is bringing the 34th edition of the America’s Cup Finals to the San Francisco Bay in 2013.

#7. Eike Batista

Richest Man in the World - Eike Batista

  • Net Worth: $30 billion (no change from last year)

  • Fortune: Self-made
  • Source: Mining, Oil
  • Country of Citizenship: Brazil
  • Residence: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
  • Marital Status: Divorced, two children
  • Education: Dropout, RWTH Aachen University

Eike Batista, Brazil’s richest man, is riding high on oil fever. His oil and gas driller, OGX Petroleo e Gas, produced its first oil in a test well offshore in late January; his 61% stake in the company is worth $19.8 billion, two-thirds of his net worth. The bombastic entrepreneur is also betting on his former passion, gold: In February 2011 he spent $1.5 billion to take private Canadian-listed Ventana Gold, which owns what he says is an incredibly promising mine in Colombia.

Stefan Persson’s cheap-chic apparel chain H&M added Versace and Marni to its stable of designers last year and opened its first stores in Croatia, Singapore and Romania. It now has 2,500 shops in 43 countries. Persson, who is chairman, bought 5 million additional shares of the company and then gifted 4 million, worth $150 million, to a new employee incentive program. Persson’s father, Erling, founded H&M in 1947; Stefan took over in 1982, he gave up the chief executive position in 1998; promoted son, Karl-Johan, 35, to chief executive in July 2009. Persson acquired the 21-cottage village of Linkenholt in Hampshire, England in 2009.

  • Education: Drop Out, High School

Li Ka-shing moves back into the top 10 for the first time since 2007. He is Asia’s richest person for the first time since 2004, despite a $500 million drop in net worth. One of the great empire builders, Li’s businesses employ 270,000 people around the world in 53 countries; he built one out of every 7 residences in Hong Kong, his Hutchison Port Holdings handles about 13% of the world’s container traffic, and his recently acquired Northumbrian Water supplies clean drinking water to 4.5 million people in England and sewerage services to another 2.7 million. Li also has personal investments in tech startups like Facebook and Spotify.

#10. Karl Albrecht

Richest Person in the World - Karl Albrecht

  • Net Worth: $25.4 billion (down from $25.5 billion in 2010)

  • Age: 92
  • Fortune: Self-made
  • Source: Aldi Supermarkets
  • Country of Citizenship: Germany
  • Residence: Mulheim an der Ruhr,
  • Marital Status: Married, two children

Karl Albrecht’s $39 billion (estimated sales) discount supermarket giant, Aldi Sud, has some 4,500 stores, including 1,200 across 32 U.S. states. It opened its first New York City locations in 2011, one in Queens and another in the Bronx. To keep costs low, Aldi stores do not accept credit cards. He and his late brother Theo got their start at their mother’s corner grocery store after World War II and turned it into a large retail chain based on low prices in a no-frills setting. They split ownership in 1961; Karl took the more profitable stores in southern Germany, plus the rights to the brand in the U.K., Australia and the U.S.

Nothing’s Gonna Change My Love For You MP

First: Mac OS X is a BSD Unix and GNU/Linux is a family of BSD UNIX-derived OSes. So you are really saying what is the differences between Unix and Windows?

Unix is modular. Which is how BOTH Mac OS X AND GNU/Linux — and for that matter Schillix and FreeBSD and DragonflyBSD exist. Nobody writes everything. Everyone writes little programs which together add up to the OS. In fact the Darwin Kernel which runs the Mac was written by someone who is now a VP and Micro$oft.

Windows is not just proprietary it is written by people who are not allowed to see more than the part of the Operating system they are working on. Thus if I want to run myLinux box for forty hours and do heavy work on it I can. It is monolithic and a lot can go wrong with it. WGA is a good example of the problem. Hello. Do you really think all those not genuine copies are not paid for?

Other Answers:

This Answer only covers X-nix and Windows systems. Mac OS and Linux are both variants of r clones of Unix. The only drawback of a Mac compared to a X-nix system(and it’s a big one) is that there are many ways to break your warranty at the command line on a Mac. This fact is not just a practical problem but has begun to become a political problem as the legislators in Washington continue to argue over our rights(linux) verses the rights of the corporation(microsoft). (think Tron- red verses blue)
There are many different reasons for doing different things in the digital world- so this Answer will cover the Philosophical, Financial, and Pragmatic pros and cons.
Pragmatic(usefulness):
1. Linux systems are quite handy at doing most common chores. Word processing, image/video/audio editing and viewing software, complex scientific tools and drafting software (loads more) can be easily added on to most Linux systems with package management software. Windows comes with some but really good software costs money. When you buy it you own it, and any bugs that come with it.
2. Linux was built by programmers for programming, web services and number crunching and so, it is really good at these kinds of tasks. Windows has the ability to do these things too, usually if you purchase it.
3. Linux doesn’t get viruses very easily, though you can get one through wine(the windows compatibility layer software) but it is really rare. Also Linux can be used to find and remove virus infections on Windows systems.
4. Linux very rarely crashes. (anyone remember Bill Gates getting shot on the nuclear sub on The Simpsons?) and is very secure. (if you want to secure windows yank the network cable from the wall)
5. if you Don’t know some basic things about how computers function, you may have a hard time using some of the more advanced feature of Linux – the radically expensive bug filled Windows compatible software solution may be for you.
6. Windows plays some games better than Linux. Especially new games. Sometimes this is because the maker of the game is operating on the principal that if they release the code then it will get exploited or stolen and so the code is not available on open source systems. Other times the it was just written for windows systems and wasn’t ported to open source. Usually a game will run in wine or dosbox on Linux.
7. Windows used to be more user friendly, This trend has reversed and is quickly becoming a strong selling point of Linux.

Financial:
1. On Windows you have to pay for the good software. Linux is Open source. This does not mean it is free. While you don’t pay money to download and use most versions, it is still limited by its license and this could have many implications for commercial use (far beyond the scope of this document) .
2. install Windows here->http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/en_US/pd/productID.216647200/categoryID.50726100/list.true
or install Ubuntu here->http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download
3. When you use or donate to Linux you support the free and open source software movement providing free software and closing the software gap for impoverished persons around the world.

Philosophical:
1. You own the source code. You own it and are free to write a better version of it. You are also responsible for contribution to the community. If you write a better version of the code you have to give it back to the community and then everyone owns it. This is how it gets written, this is why it is free and why it is virus resistant. In this way it is organic and grows with the needs of its users.
2. Windows uses closed source code(unreadable) which hides bugs so that only crackers and black hat hackers find them. This is based off of the philosophy that other developers can somehow steal the code or find bugs in it. Kind of backwards.
3. Microsoft doesn’t play well with others. Microsoft programs like word don’t read document produced by other programs well, so it’s better just not to get into them. One extreme example is that Internet Explorer just recently released their first fully css compliant browser last year. .. sad.
4. Windows releases bug fixes on a schedule, this is a result of corporate policy. Linux fixes them as soon as a solution is found. (this may be more pragmatic.)
5.Programmer don’t like to be locked out of the code. If you can’t change it what happens when the firmware changes?

The biggest differences are in the licensing.
If we Look at all of the pros and cons we can see the only reason to use Windows is if we want to play a newer game or if we need to write a document for a windows program like word. Windows won’t read open word documents uniformly and if they did, Microsoft would release a word update on the next update date … to fix it.
